Togetherness

James Wright

Title: Togetherness
Date: 2025
Medium: Corten steel
Artist description: To date my biggest challenge as a sculptor. But that’s the reason I do it. The story of the work can be interpreted visually. It has a strong presence reflecting the family that commissioned the piece. Viewers will see/feel the love and joy that the work holds. RIP Jim.

Artist bio:

James Wright is a New Zealand Sculptor who draws inspiration from his heritage and rural upbringing. His large scale Corten steel sculptures are found throughout NZ in private and public collections. A raw and natural style gives James’ work a distinct and striking, unique look. Working with the steel’s natural tendencies, James finds forms within the material and draws it out to stand proud in the landscape.

Background:
’Togetherness’ speaks of deep friendships and love. Jim and Pam Ross and the Blundell’s have a lifetime of memories together- growing up side-by-side, raising families, celebrating, grieving and all the love, laughter, and life that happens in between. And now, our families share a lasting piece of art. Before he passed, Jim shared a final wish with his lifelong friend and neighbour Guy Blundell: For him and wife Pam to gift a sculpture to Riverhaven Artland as a lasting reminder of the deep bonds that tie people together and to mark their friendship. Humbled and moved, we accepted this gift with love and open arms. Now this friendship is quite literally etched into the landscape Jimmy spent so much time in with us.  It’s called ’Togetherness’ and it is a reminder that even in death, the bonds and friendships we create endure.
